Doggy Bank

Where do you keep your pocket money? In a piggy bank? Why not make a Doggy Bank instead!

You will need:
  • 1 pint plastic milk bottle
  • Scissors
  • Sticky tape
  • Pencil
  • Cardboard box card
  • Cereal box card
  • Newspaper
  • PVA glue
  • Stick glue
  • Kitchen roll or tissue paper
  • Paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Permanent pen
First, you need to make the dog's head.

Clean out an empty one plastic pint milk bottle, like this one.

Take off the lid, and put it aside for the moment.
Using a pair of scissors, carefully cut off the handle.

Cutting plastic can be quite hard, so don't be afraid to ask to help!
Neaten things up by covering the holes in the bottle with pieces of sticky tape.
Next, you need to put a slot in the top part of bottle.
Do this by piercing a hole through the plastic with a sharp pencil...
...as this will allow you to get a pair of scissors in, making cutting out much easier!
That completes the bank part of the Doggy Bank!

Next, you need to make it look more dog-like by adding features.
Cut out a strip of cardboard box card, and wrap it around the back of the bottle to make a collar.
Use sticky tape to hold it in place.
For paws, scrunch up two sausages of newspaper and mould them so that they're slightly flat at the bottom.
Place them on either side of the head, and tape them into place.
Next, scrunch up more newspaper and pad out the lid of the bottle, to make a rounded nose.

Try not to put any tape on the inside of the lid - otherwise you won't be able to screw it back on!
For ears, cut out diamond shaped pieces of cereal box card, with curved points at the end.
Cut a line down from one of the points, roughly into the centre...
...overlap the parts like this...
...and put on some sticky tape. This will give you a floppy ear!

You'll need to make two of these.
Tape the ears to either side of the head.

That completes the basic dog shape.

You should now have something that looks like this.
The kennel is next. For this, you'll need some A3-sized cardboard box card.

Draw a simple house shape, with a pointed roof...
...and then cut the shape out. Use this as a template to draw one more house shape, and cut that out too!
On one of the card pieces, draw an archway for a door, and cut that out.
Glue the two pieces together using stick glue, like this.
Add on detail, like card strips for a roof. If you cut the ends at angles, they fit together perfectly.

Stick these on, with stick glue.
Next, cut out a little diamond-shaped piece of cardboard box card...
...and stick this on, to cover the join.
You can also add a little rectangle of cardboard box card for a name plaque!
Next, dab some strong glue all over the back of the dog...
...and stick it to the kennel.

You may need to hold the dog in place until the glue dries.
When the glue has dried, you'll have something that looks like this!
To finish off, mix some PVA glue with water and paste a layer of kitchen roll all over the dog.

Be careful not to go over the slot, or the nose!
When the dog is fully covered, leave it to dry.

When it has dried, you can paint it.
Here Neil is using brown paint for the ears, black for the nose and blue for the collar.
Next, paint the kennel brown.

Streak in different shades of brown to give a wood effect.
And here's the finished Doggy Bank!
As you can see, this one has had extra detailing added with a permanent pen.
Finally, give the nose a coat of PVA glue. When it dries, it goes all shiny - just like a real dog's nose!
Try it yourself!
